Internal Parasites in Sheep & Goats IPM/FAMACHA© Workshop

Saturday, October 16, 2021

10:30 am to 3:00 pm

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County at the JCC Carnahan Center, 525 Falconer Street, Jamestown, NY

Internal parasites are one of the biggest health problems affecting goats and sheep in the Northeast. Dewormer resistance is becoming commonplace. As a result, producers need to know how best to manage parasites. In this workshop, producers will learn the basics of parasite control as well as how to develop integrated parasite management programs for their farms. We will also provide hands-on training on how to use the FAMACHA© Anemia Card (good only for the barber pole worm) as part of a 5-point check to determine which animals in your herd or flock most likely need deworming. This workshop will also include hands-on training on doing fecal egg counts. You are welcome to bring a refrigerated fecal sample of 8 to 10 fecal pellets from one sheep or goat at your farm to the workshop.

We are pleased to have guest speakers Dr. tatiana L. Stanton, Cornell Sheep & Goat State Extension Specialist and Janice Liotta from the Cornell University Dwight Bowman Parasitology Lab lead this hands-on workshop.

The cost of this workshop is $25.00 for the first person from a family/farm (includes one FAMACHA© card & workshop) plus $10 for each additional individual (workshop only) from the same farm/family .

Pre-registration is required by October 13th by contacting Lisa Kempisty, Extension Educator, Dairy & Livestock at 716-664-9502 Ext 203 or ljk4@cornell.edu with the name address and phone number of those interested in participating. The workshop fee is payable by cash or check at the workshop. Class size is limited, so register early. Please bring your own bag lunch and beverage. Bottled water will be provided.

As we will have some live goats at the workshop, please wear clean clothes and shoes to the workshop and plan to change them prior to doing your own farm chores.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County is now located at the Jamestown Community College Campus in Jamestown, NY. Our FAMACHA Workshop will be held in classrooms at the Carnahan Building, located at 241 James Street, at Jamestown Community College campus, Jamestown, NY (GPS address).
