While we are unable to gather on farm, we can still gather virtually. Please join us on April 21st and/or May 5th from 11am-noon via zoom to discuss dairy management topics. This free event is for dairy producers in the Southwest NY Region.
The main speaker will be Alycia Drwencke, Dairy Management Specialist with the SWNYDLFC team. Teresa McMahon and Ginny Carlberg, FarmNet representatives will be joining us with tips on managing stress during difficult times. Lynn Bliven, CCE Allegany will serve as our moderator and Zoom coordinator. Following the main presentation of approximately 30 minutes, we will have open discussion.
On April 21st the main topic will be disbudding and May 5th will cover fitness for transport

The SWNY Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Team is partnering with CCE Steuben to host the Spring 2020 SWNY Beef Industry Virtual Summit. The meeting will be held over Zoom, with call-in option available. The meeting is planned for Tuesday, May 5th, from 6:30pm - 8:00pm. Ariel Kirk with CCE Steuben and Amy Barkley with SWNYDLFC will facilitate the meeting and will be encouraging input from producers and educator/industry personnel to fuel the discussion. Possible discussion topics include what is important to each individual as a member of the industry, market opportunities, business development, current challenges in the face of COVID-19, and future programming ideas for CCE. The Asian longhorned tick (ALT) is a threat to companion animals, livestock and potentially also to wildlife. So far this species in the US has not been found infected with human pathogens. There is still a lot we don't know about ALTs, so this free webinar will serve as an overview of what we do know about the biology, ecology, and vectorial capacity of this tick species?and how existing approaches for combating native ticks may either work or backfire on this species. The presenters will also discuss other invasive tick species in the US and the potential for additional ones to become established.

On Farm Poultry Processing Workshop

If you raise meat birds and are looking for a training class to learn about proper dressing techniques and selling poultry in New York under the 1,000 bird exemption, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County is hosting an online training this coming Monday, July 27, 2020 from 1-4pm. Workshop participants will learn to recognize diseases of public health concern, take basic biosecurity measures, write and implement basic Standard Sanitary Operating Procedures, develop Good Manufacturing Practices and an understanding of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, along with properly dispose of offal and management of waste water.

In this free webinar, we will talk about the key differences and similarities to achieving successful fertilization whether you utilize live-cover or utilizing artificial insemination (AI) for your breeding program. Focus will be placed on the unique pig-isms of managing sows and boars during breeding and best practices for using live cover or AI. Speakers include Penn State Swine State Specialist, Dr. Elizabeth Hines, and Dr. Mark Estienne of Virginia Tech.

In a webinar late last year, these attorneys informed our members about overtime pay, the mandatory day of rest, the right to organize and negotiate a Collective Bargaining Agreement, and other topics. Join us on Thursday, July 30 at 12 p.m. to learn about guidance on these regulations just issued by New York including which employees are excluded from the day of rest provision, who is covered by the over-60 hour overtime provision, the definition of immediate family, and more.
