Management of Internal Parasites in Sheep and Goats

July 16, 2016

Betsy Hodge, Livestock Educator for CCE St. Lawrence, will instruct the class on the different types of worms, how to manage your pastures to avoid increasing the worm load, what the different types of de-wormers are good for, and how to use the FAMACHA system to deworm only those sheep or goats that need it.

This is an all-day class with lots of information. Beginners and experienced shepherds and goat farmers are welcome.

Participants will learn to use a microscope to do a fecal egg count, one piece of the puzzle useful when making de-worming decisions. In addition, each person in the class will have to do hands on FAMACHA scoring on the Extension sheep flock to qualify for an official FAMACHA card.

Please register at 315-379-9192 with Bobbi-Jo or Betsy at bmf9@cornell.edu by July 13th. The class requires 8 people to run so please sign up by July 13th if you want to attend! If there are not enough people signed up to run the class it will be postponed and re-scheduled for later in the year. Cost is $35.00 for the first person from a farm and $10.00 for additional payable at the door.
