Women for the Land Learning Circle - Conservation Action, followed by a bus tour at Table Rock Farm in Castile, NY

Open to all women involved in agriculture in New York, AFT invites you to join us for a peer-to-peer Learning Circle and Farm Tour this August. Our focus is Conservation in Action. Attendees will meet at an immersive photograph exhibit featuring western New York female farmers. We will hear about how conservation is put into action from a certified crop consultant who specializes in on-farm conservation planning. Then we will board a bus and head over to an award-winning family-run dairy, Table Rock Farm, that is at the forefront of agricultural innovation, to see it all in person. Meghan Hauser, a co-owner of the farm, will lead us through the efforts she and her team have implemented to make their 100+ year old farm an environmentally and economically thriving operation. After the tour, we will reflect on the experience and discuss action steps we can take to achieve our own conservation goals.

The 2021 Cornell Field Crops annual field day will be held August 12th highlighting the latest field crops research across CALS and providing an opportunity for in-person exchange of ideas and experiences. This year's program offers a wide variety of content from no-till planting into rolled cover crops to the use of unoccupied robotic vehicles to monitor plant growth and health.

Riverside Dairy is proud to host a farm tour focusing on cow comfort, calf care and transition cow facilities as it related to a NY Farm Viability grant project over the past year.  CCE Dairy Specialists will go over results and benchmarks from assessments of these areas from all 15 farms involved in the study and the farm will share areas they've worked to improve on their dairy, as well as give a farm tour of facilities.  The tour is free to all participants, but registration is required.

The Southern Tier Sheep and Wool Grower's annual wool pool will be Friday, September 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Otsego County Fair Grounds, Morris, NY. Only clean white wool, both good clean and off-sorts/short wool, will be accepted.

This sale will consist of 9 lots consisting of 300 head of USDA graded beef cattle as well as a set of exposed Angus Heifers. Cattle have been vaccinated using modified live vaccines for IBR, BRSV, PI3, BVD, and clostridia, and pasteurella, and have been de-wormed. 

Your Extension Specialists will be chipping corn stalks and checking dry matters to target corn silage harvest timing. We are collaborating with Tully Ag Center and John Winchell, Territory Sales Representative with ALLTECH. Dry matters will be determined using NIR, which allows a short turn-around time. Masks will need to be worn at the mill, as well as 6 feet of social distancing.

Join farmers Kathie and Kirk Arnold on a tour of Twin Oaks Dairy LLC, which has been shipping certified organic milk since 1998. Rotational grazing is a foundational principle of the farm that keeps soils covered and sequestering carbon. They recently started planting trees in some of their pastures in a foray into silvopasture. The Farm Disaster Preparation program will help farm owners plan for and manage disasters that might occur.  This program focuses on practical pre-disaster education and preparedness, regarding farm equipment safety on the road, fire or structure collapse, storm and wind damage, criminal activity, farm chemical risks and biosecurity.  Farms that complete the Farm Disaster Preparation training will receive a certificate to provide to their insurer and may be eligible for a credit or discount toward the farm's annual insurance premium.  The value of the credit or discount will vary according to individual policies and policyholder circumstances but can be up to a 10 percent discount.

Many producers are curious about how to prove they have a clean flock that is free of diseases like Johnes Disease, CLA and CAE.  The second topic of the talk will be about how to test your herd for these diseases, what the tests tell you, and approximate costs.  It is important to think about what your goals are for the testing program before you start.

This course will cover basic calf and heifer management principles led by staff from Cornell University and industry researchers. It is designed for dairy business on-farm personnel (owner or employee) seeking to increase their knowledge of calf and heifer management. Participants should possess a formal or informal background in dairy cattle management, but not necessarily in calf and heifer management.
