The Michigan State University Small Ruminant Team will be hosting their annual "Birth Management for Sheep and Goats" program virtually this year. Each session will feature seminars, specialized instructional videos and question and answer sessions with an expert panel to cover a variety of topics, including nutritional management, use of ultrasound, facility design, newborn care, hypothermia treatment, grafting, vaccination protocols, mortality diagnoses, health and feeding program assessment.

Jan 28 - Corn Silage Hybrid Trials 2020 Update and Management Tips, Joe Lawrence Corn Silage Hybrid Trials 2020 Update and Management Tips
The Corn Silage Hybrid Evaluation Program is a source of independent information on hybrid performance and a platform for conducting other work to better understand how to optimize the production of corn silage. Joe oversees the project with tremendous support from Margaret Smith, Tom Overton and their teams. The results of the 2020 trials will be discussed with emphasis on how 2020 growing condition's influenced both crop yield and forage quality. Forage quality was analyzed and utilized to predict how each hybrid would perform in a dairy feeding program using the Cornell CNCPS nutrition model to predict milk yield from cows fed each of the hybrid entries. A second study, comparing 4 different hybrids was designed to evaluate the growing season and equipment operation and their effect on the performance of forage harvesting equipment in consistently delivering corn silage hybrids that meet the narrow set of criteria set up by the industry for forage particle size and kernel processing. The resulting kernel processing scores and starch digestibility will be reviewed.

Management Factors that Contribute to High Yield in Corn A number of crop management practices and inputs are reported to increase corn (Zea mays L.) yields, but most research to date has evaluated single practices and not their combined effect. To assess this combined effect, five trials were conducted in Virginia from 2012-2014. Treatments consisted of the Standard and Management Intensification (MI) practices. Single factors were either added (to Standard) or removed (from MI) for each treatment. The lessons learned from this study will be presented.

Cornell Cooperative Extension's Livestock Program Work Team ( LPWT ) is pleased to announce the second in a series of beef production virtual learning opportunities: Introduction to Stocker Cattle. Stocker cattle are typically light weight calves, either heifers or steers, that are successfully weaned and available to enter the beef production phase with the main objective of adding body weight efficiently and economically prior to the finishing phase. Many regions of New York are well suited for stocker cattle during our grazing season allowing producers to make use of lush pastures or underutilized acreage. Beef producers interested in learning more about stocker cattle are encouraged to register for the virtual program. Guest presenters include Beef Cattle Extension Specialist, Dr. Mike Baker and Jason Detzel, C.C.E. of Ulster Co. Livestock Educator and beef producer with first hand knowledge and experiences with stocker cattle.

This course will provide students with fundamental knowledge to understand and manage an effective dairy reproductive program. Cornell University faculty and PRO-DAIRY staff will cover key topics, including Anatomy and Physiology, Synchronization Protocols, Breeding Strategies, A.I. Techniques, Monitoring Reproductive Programs, and Heifer Reproduction Management.
Two courses are offered, covering the same content. One will be taught exclusively in English and one will be taught exclusively in Spanish.

FARM DISASTER PREPARATION CERTIFICATE TRAINING

CCE will host a Farm Disaster Preparation program to help farm owners plan for and manage disasters that might occur. This program focuses on practical pre-disaster education and preparedness, regarding farm equipment safety on the road, fire or structure collapse, storm and wind damage, criminal activity, farm chemical risks and biosecurity. Farms that complete the Farm Disaster Preparation training will receive a certificate to provide to their insurer and may be eligible for a credit or discount toward the farm's annual insurance premium. The value of the credit or discount will vary according to individual policies and policyholder circumstances but can be up to a 10 percent discount.

Join Nancy Glazier with Cornell Cooperative Extension's NWNY Team for the classroom portion of the Beef Quality Assurance training Wednesday, April 14 from 7-8:30 pm via Zoom. Topics covered include safe handling and use of health care products, safe animal handling, animal welfare and record keeping. Producers will become Level 1 certified with the completion of the class along with submission of required paperwork.

Small Ruminant Parasite Control

Parasites are the most important limiting factor in small ruminant flocks. Learn how to monitor, treat and prevent parasites in your flock. In this online class, we will discuss the lifecycle and biology of parasites affecting small ruminants and demonstrate how to perform fecal sampling to obtain egg counts. Fecal sampling is a simple procedure you can do at home to approximate the parasite load your sheep or goats are carrying. Parasitic egg counts help you to make decisions on the effectiveness of your deworming program. We will also review the 5-point check for small ruminant health including an overview of FAMACHA and how it can help you to monitor and treat your sheep and goats.

Presented as a partnership of Cornell University and Miner Institute, this Basic Dairy Nutrition Shortcourse will cover basic principles of dairy cattle nutrition and their application within dairy herd management. It is designed primarily for beginning nutritionists and allied industry professionals seeking a more comprehensive foundation or a refresher in dairy cattle nutrition.
This program has been taught in-person every other year at Miner Institute since 1997 and in 2021, we are offering this course for the first time in an online, virtual format with weekly opportunities for live interaction with speakers.

Cornell Cooperative Extension is offering a program for goat producers to learn more about the prevalence of Johnes Disease in the North Country goats. Jessica Scillieri Smith, Field Veterinarian for NY Ag and Markets and Betsy Hodge, CCE Livestock Educator, will present information about the findings of a study they have been conducting over the last few years on North Country farms. They will also talk about signs of Johnes Disease and how to manage it in your flock. Johnes is a challenging disease to manage because it doesn't show itself until the animals are older and it can mimic the symptoms of other problems like internal parasites.

Nov 2 - Transition Cow Nutrition This session discusses why the transition diet has a tremendous impact on cow health and milk production, and how to ensure adequate nutrition is supplied at each phase of transition.
Nov 9 - Feeding the Transition Cow The mechanics of providing feed in conjunction with transition cow behavior is a crucial aspect in providing adequate nutrition. We'll discuss factors in feeding management during this session.
Nov 16 - Selective Dry Cow Therapy Learn how dry cow therapy impacts transition cow management. We will discuss the basics of selective dry cow therapy.
Nov 23 - Facility Considerations Housing can make or break a cow's transition period and her next lactation. Both her physical and behavioral needs will be discussed.
