American Farmland Trust's New York Agricultural Landowner Guide aims to help farmers and other farmland owners navigate the sometimes confusing array of public programs available to reduce taxes as well as steward and protect their land. This updated version also identifies energy and environmental opportunities in a "green economy" and programs focused on enhancing farm viability. Throughout the guide, program titles are followed by the names of agencies/organizations that farmers should contact to learn more about a program. The guide consists of the following sections:
- Tax Reduction and Exemption: Strategies for reducing the tax burden on agricultural landowners
- Farmland Protection: Techniques for keeping land in farming
- Environmental Management: Programs to help farmers protect soil and water resources
- Natural Resource Conservation: Options for conserving wetlands, wildlife habitat and other natural resources
- Farm Viability: Programs helping to build long term farm profitability
- Environmental Markets and Energy: Opportunities to enhance farms and the environment
- Resources: Contact information for agencies and organizations to help landowners achieve their agricultural and conservation goals
